Shift Length Calculator

Plan a shift in advance by giving a start time and either an end time, to find the length, or a target length, to find the end time.

Reconciling an already-recorded punch instead of planning ahead? See Clock In / Clock Out Solver.

Worked example

Starting a shift at 09:00 with a planned length of 8 hours gives a scheduled end of 17:00, a straightforward forward calculation useful for building a schedule before any work has actually happened. Plan a longer 10-hour shift from the same 09:00 start instead and the scheduled end pushes to 19:00, still well inside the same calendar day. Push the start time later, to 20:00, with that same 10-hour length, and the scheduled end rolls past midnight to 06:00 the next day, which this calculator flags explicitly rather than silently returning a clock time with no indication that a full day has actually passed. This forward planning direction is the opposite of solving for a shift's length from a known start and end, which the Clock In / Clock Out Solver handles instead.

Common mistakes

  • Using this to total an already-worked shift that included breaks. This models a scheduled span only, with no break deduction, so an actually-worked total needs the Hours Calculator instead.
  • Missing the next-day flag on a long shift that happens to start late in the evening, which can make the scheduled end look like it belongs to the wrong calendar day entirely.

Limitations

No breaks are modeled here, and no time zone conversion is applied. This computes a plain scheduled span from a start time and a length. Once a shift has actually happened and needs breaks subtracted, use the Hours Calculator instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can the scheduled end roll to the next calendar day?
Yes, a length that pushes the end time past midnight is flagged as landing on the next day rather than shown as an ordinary same-day clock time.
Does this account for a lunch break inside the shift?
No, this reports the full scheduled span only. Deduct any break separately using the Hours Calculator or the Break Deduction Calculator.
