Availability-Adjusted Completion Planner
Give a total effort, a daily capacity, a start date, and a working-day calendar (with your own excluded dates). This walks the calendar day by day, skipping weekends and exclusions, and reports the exact completion date, including whether the final working day is only partially used.
Worked example
20 hours of effort at 8 hours a day, starting Monday, January 4, 2027, on a Monday-through-Friday calendar, completes Wednesday, January 6, using a full Monday and Tuesday plus a partial 4-hour, 50 percent Wednesday. Raise that same effort to 24 hours instead, and the plan now completes on Thursday, January 7, since the third day needs its full 8-hour capacity and a small amount spills into a fourth working day.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to add known blackout dates as exclusions, which silently shifts the completion date later than a naive calculation would suggest.
- Assuming daily capacity stays constant across every working day. Only one fixed number is applied here, so a day with genuinely different capacity needs a separate calculation.
Limitations
This assumes a single fixed daily capacity number for every working day. It does not model days with different capacities from each other, so a schedule with uneven daily availability needs to be split into separate segments.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens on a partial final day?
- The completion date is that working day itself, and the receipt reports exactly what fraction of that day's capacity was actually needed to finish the remaining effort.
- Does a change in daily capacity partway through get handled?
- No, one fixed daily capacity number is applied across every working day in the plan, so a schedule with genuinely different capacity on different days needs to be checked in separate segments.
