Worked example
Someone born January 1, 2000, checked as of January 1, 2027, is exactly 27 years, 0 months, 0 days old, a clean result since the reference date lands precisely on the birthday itself. Check that same birth date one day earlier instead, December 31, 2026, and the age reports as 26 years, 11 months, 30 days, still the previous completed year, since the birthday has not technically arrived yet. This is the calendar-age convention most people mean when they state their own age. It counts completed years only, never rounding up early just because a birthday is close.
Common mistakes
- Rounding age up to the nearest year instead of counting only completed years. Someone remains their previous age right up until the exact calendar date of their birthday, not before.
- Expecting a specific convention for a February 29 birth date without checking which one this calculator's underlying calendar math actually applies. The Milestone Birthday Planner and Relationship or Event Anniversary Calculator instead let that convention be chosen explicitly.
Limitations
This computes a calendar age only. It does not determine legal age, eligibility for any program, or any other status tied to a specific jurisdiction or policy.
Frequently asked questions
- How does this handle a February 29 birthday in a non-leap year?
- This calculator observes the anniversary on March 1 in a non-leap year, not February 28. The completed year does not count until March 1 arrives. If you want to choose February 28 instead, or see the assumption stated on every result, use the Milestone Birthday Planner or the Relationship or Event Anniversary Calculator, both of which let you pick the observed date explicitly.
- Why does age stay the same right up until the exact birthday?
- Because calendar age counts completed years only. A person remains their previous age for every single day up to and including the day before their birthday, then advances by exactly one year on the birthday itself.
