Event Countdown / Count-Up Planner
Enter an event date and a reference date. If the event is in the future, get a countdown, and if it's in the past, get a count-up instead.

Worked example
An event set for January 14, 2027, checked against a reference date of January 4, 2027, is 10 days away, framed as a countdown since the event has not happened yet. Move the reference date forward past January 14, say to January 20, and the same event now reports 6 days since the event, automatically switching to a count-up framing rather than showing a confusing negative number. Set the reference date to exactly January 14 itself, matching the event date precisely, and the result states plainly that today is the event, with no days counted in either direction. This automatic switch between countdown and count-up at the exact moment the event passes is what keeps the result meaningful before, during, and after the date in question.
Common mistakes
- Assuming this handles a recurring event that comes back every year or every month. It tracks exactly one specific event date. See the Recurring Date Generator for a genuinely repeating schedule instead.
- Expecting a negative number once the event has passed. The framing switches to a count-up with a positive day count instead of showing a negative countdown.
Limitations
This counts whole calendar days only. It does not account for time zones or a specific time of day, so an event tracked down to the hour needs a different tool built for that level of precision.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens if the event date equals the reference date?
- The result reports that today is the event itself, with zero days counted in either the countdown or count-up direction.
- Does this framing switch automatically once the event has passed?
- Yes, a still-future event is shown as a countdown, and a past event automatically switches to a count-up showing how many days have elapsed since it happened.
