Recurring Business-Day Event Generator

Generate the first business day, last business day, or a specific nth business day of each month across a run of consecutive months, using your own stated workweek and exclusions.

Working days

Need just one month's first or last business day instead of a series? See First / Last Business Day of Period.

Worked example

January 2027 opens on a Friday, so under a Monday through Friday workweek with no holidays excluded, the first business day of that month is January 1 itself, since a Friday is a normal open weekday. A month that happened to open on a Saturday would instead report its first business day as the following Monday, skipping the closed weekend entirely. Requesting the third business day of a month walks forward from the first open day and counts three qualifying days, which can land anywhere from the 3rd to the 5th of the month depending on exactly which weekday the month starts on.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that a month with a heavily excluded early stretch, such as several consecutive holiday closures, can push even the first business day surprisingly late into the month.
  • Requesting an nth business day higher than the number of business days a shorter month actually contains, which reports no qualifying date for that month rather than guessing at one.

Limitations

This generates dates from the stated workweek and exclusions only. It does not apply any specific country's official public holiday calendar automatically, so add your own exclusions if a holiday should also be skipped.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when a month has no qualifying business day at all?
That specific month is reported as having no qualifying date, rather than being silently skipped from the output or approximated with a nearby date.
How many months can I generate at once?
Up to 60 consecutive months, which keeps the generated series bounded and quick to review.
