Time Zone Difference Calculator

Pick an anchor date/time and two zones to compare. The difference is computed at that specific instant, since daylight saving can change it on other dates.

Need a full local-time conversion instead of just the offset difference? See Time Zone Converter.

Worked example

America/Phoenix and America/Denver share exactly the same offset in winter, both sitting at UTC minus 7, since Arizona does not observe daylight saving time at all and Denver reverts to that same offset every winter. Once spring arrives and Denver moves its clocks forward while Phoenix stays put, the two zones diverge by a full hour, Denver at UTC minus 6 and Phoenix still at UTC minus 7, purely because one zone changed its rule and the other has no such rule to change. This is exactly why the anchor date matters here. Comparing these same two zones on a January date and a July date gives two genuinely different answers, not a rounding difference or a display quirk.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the difference between two zones stays constant across the whole year. It changes whenever either zone crosses its own daylight saving transition date, and those two dates do not always match between zones.
  • Comparing zones without setting a specific anchor date, which leaves the comparison meaningless for any zone pair where at least one side observes daylight saving time.

Limitations

This compares two zones at one specific instant only. It does not track how the difference shifts across an entire year. See the DST Transition Comparator for that broader view.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this need an anchor date at all?
Because the offset difference genuinely depends on it. There is no single fixed difference between two zones that both observe daylight saving time, since each one's offset can change on its own transition date.
Can the difference between two zones ever be zero?
Yes, two zones with different names can share the exact same offset at a given instant, such as Arizona and Colorado both sitting at UTC minus 7 during the winter months.
