Worked example
A 40-hour weekly target spread evenly across 5 working days allocates to a clean 8 hours a day, with nothing left over to distribute. Spread that same 40-hour target across all 7 days of the week instead, and 40 hours does not divide into whole minutes evenly across 7 days. Most days land on 5 hours and 43 minutes, and whatever leftover minutes cannot split evenly go to the earliest listed days, one extra minute at a time, so the full week still totals exactly 40 hours rather than drifting off target by a few minutes due to rounding. Switch to check mode instead of auto allocate mode, enter your own already-planned hours for each day, and the tool simply reports whether that specific plan actually reaches the stated weekly target.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a perfectly even split across every day is the only valid plan. Any combination of daily hours that sums to the weekly target works. Only the total matters for this calculator, not how it is divided across the days.
- Forgetting to switch to check mode when you already have a specific plan in mind. Auto allocate mode always generates its own even split rather than validating a plan you already made.
Limitations
This only allocates or checks numbers against a stated weekly target. It has no knowledge of actual availability, scheduling conflicts, or any specific workplace policy about how hours should be distributed across a week.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens to leftover minutes when splitting the target evenly?
- They are distributed to the earliest listed days, one small bucket at a time, so the full week's total still matches the stated target exactly rather than being off by a few minutes.
- Can I plan a workweek shorter than 5 days?
- Yes, enter however many working days actually apply, and the target is split or checked across exactly that number of days.
