4-4-5 Fiscal Calendar Generator

Generate a full 4-4-5 fiscal calendar, four quarters of three periods each following a 4 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks pattern, from a stated year-end anchor. WhenMath never assumes any organization's actual fiscal calendar. You state the anchor weekday, month, and rule.

Need a 13-equal-period fiscal calendar instead of 4-4-5? See 13-Period Fiscal Calendar Generator.

Worked example

A fiscal year ending on the last Saturday in January under the 4-4-5 pattern starts the Sunday right after the prior fiscal year's own last Saturday in January. The 12 periods split into four quarters of three periods each, with every quarter running 4 weeks, then 4 weeks, then 5 weeks, for 13 weeks a quarter and 52 weeks a year in the ordinary case. Roughly once every five to six years the gap between two consecutive January anchors spans 53 weeks instead of 52, and when that happens the extra week is added to period 12, the final period of the fiscal year, a fixed and stated rule rather than a silent adjustment buried in the numbers.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every fiscal year has exactly 52 weeks. A 53-week year is a normal, expected outcome of anchoring to a specific weekday rather than a fixed calendar date, not an error condition.
  • Picking the nearest-weekday rule when your organization actually uses the last-on-or-before rule, or the reverse. The two rules only agree in most years and can diverge by a full week right at a year-end boundary.

Limitations

This computes a calendar purely from the stated anchor and pattern. It does not look up, confirm, or certify any specific retailer's or organization's actual published fiscal calendar, and it makes no financial reporting or compliance claim about the periods it generates.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the anchor weekday matter so much?
Retail fiscal calendars are built around a consistent weekday, often to keep weekly sales reporting aligned to the same day of the week every single period, which a fixed calendar date cannot guarantee.
Can I download the full period list?
Yes, the download CSV button exports every period's quarter, period number, start date, end date, and week count in one file.
