Worked example

The last Monday of February 2027 is February 22. Working backward from February 28, the month's last day and a Sunday, the most recent Monday before or on that date is February 22. Check December 2027 instead, and the last Friday is December 31 itself, since December's last day happens to fall on a Friday that year, meaning the "last occurrence" and the "last day of the month" can sometimes coincide.

Common mistakes

• Assuming the last weekday of the month always falls in the final week shown on a calendar grid. It always falls within the last 7 days of the month, but that range can span two different calendar-grid rows depending on where the month starts.
• Confusing "last occurrence" with a fixed date, such as always expecting the last Friday to land in the last few days of the month. The gap between the last day of the month and its last occurrence of a given weekday can be as much as 6 days.

Limitations

This is calendar arithmetic only. It does not check whether that date is actually a working day at your organization, so a "last Friday" landing on a holiday still needs to be checked separately.
