Date of Birth Backsolver

Know someone's age as of a specific date? Solve backward for their birth date. An exact years/months/days age solves to one date, while a whole-years-only age solves to a range.

Known age
Have the birth date already and want the age instead? See Age on a Date Calculator.

Worked example

An exact age of 27 years, 0 months, 0 days as of January 1, 2027, backsolves to a single birth date of January 1, 2000, since a full years-months-days figure pins the birth date down exactly. Backsolve a whole-years-only age of 27 as of that same reference date instead, and the calculator reports a full year-wide range, from January 2, 1999, through January 1, 2000, since any birth date in that stretch is equally consistent with "27 years old" stated in whole years alone.

Common mistakes

  • Treating "27 years old" as if it names one specific birth date. Without a month and day attached, it is consistent with a full year-wide range of possible birth dates, not a single day.
  • Assuming the reference date used for the backsolve is always today. It is whatever date is entered in the as-of field, which can be any past or future date.

Limitations

This is a calendar calculation only. It does not verify or authenticate anyone's actual identity or official birth record in any way.

Frequently asked questions

Why does "years only" give a range instead of a date?
Because whole-years age alone genuinely doesn't pin down a single day, so showing a single false exact answer would be actively misleading rather than helpful.
How wide is the range for a whole-years-only age?
It spans a full year, from the earliest possible birth date consistent with that age down to the latest one, since any day within that year could match a whole-number age as of the given reference date.
